Watch out for the ‘autumn rush’ this half term week

If you are out and about this half term week, you might notice an influx of extra traffic on the roads as the ‘autumn rush’ hits.  

A recent survey of 1,400 drivers by RAC Breakdown found that drivers will undertake an estimated 19.4 million leisure trips before the end of this half-term week (Sunday October 31). 

Interestingly, the data showed that people were less concerned about Covid when making half-term plans, with just 6 per cent of respondents listing the pandemic as a reason not to travel. 

Other RAC research found that of those who are set to travel this week, 72 per cent will travel up to 200 miles from home and 22 per cent will travel further than they typically would during this time of year.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis said, “Our research shows that despite a rise in Covid cases nationally, it’s clear the pandemic is becoming much less of a factor in whether people decide whether or not to get away for a leisure trip.

"Just six-in-100 drivers say they’re not travelling specifically because of the virus, compared to 10% before the August bank holiday and 18% at the start of May.

“It might also be the case that the rise in UK ‘staycations’ brought about by Covid has encouraged some drivers to venture further afield than they would normally at this time of year.”

If you are planning to take a trip this week, it is important that you carry out checks on your vehicle, such as checking oil, coolant and screen wash levels as well as tyre pressure and tread, particularly as the cold weather is setting in.
