Check your tyres this winter

As we approach the winter months, it is essential to keep an eye on the condition of your tyres, which can suffer in cold weather.

Snow and ice are a given danger that most road users recognise, but you may be surprised to know that cold and damp conditions pose just as much risk.

Throughout the winter, you should carry out the following checks regularly:

  • Check that tread depth is well above the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre, around its entire circumference. TyreSafe suggests the 20p test in which you place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. You can find a helpful video explanation here.
  • At least once per month check tyre pressure against the vehicle manufacturers recommended levels when the tyres are cold (IE travelled less than two miles).
  • Look for any cuts, cracks or bulges and remove any embedded objects.

We at Marshall Minibus are dedicated to supporting our customers and will be on hand to assist with maintenance this winter as standard under our minibus leasing contracts.
