6 Scary School Trip Destinations For Halloween

To do ‘All Hallows Eve’ justice and celebrate in truly terrifying style, you need to venture beyond the school grounds and into the madness and misery that lies beyond. I’m not talking about your town and its inhabitants (well, not solely). I’m talking about the events and destinations that come to life — or should that be death? — at this time of year in locations up and down the country.

From haunted castles and gloomy dungeons to hair-raising ghost tours and sinister mazes, the UK has it all. Check out our roundup of this year’s top Halloween-themed school trip ideas and let the little ghouls loose.

1. The Haunted Castle at Warwick Castle

At over a thousand years old, Warwick castle is impressively spine-tingling at any time of year. But come late October (21st-31st), it turns into ‘The Haunted Castle’ and all its scary secrets come to the fore.
During the day, there are plenty of fun activities and friendly scares for all the family, including the creepy Dolls House and the new Horrible Histories Maze. And by night, actors and special effects create an interactive and truly nerve-racking experience. Save up to 20 percent off some admission tickets by booking online in advance.

2. Frights and Hair Cuts at The London Dungeon

A fully immersive history class and scare show in one, The London Dungeon is one of the capitals must-see attractions for a reason. In its dark and dingy environment you encounter smells, sights, and stories that are as frightening as they are funny — Jack the Ripper and the famous barber of Fleet Street, Sweeny Todd, to name a few who make an appearance. The recommended age is 12 and above, and the new attraction especially for Halloween this year is the Death Express — an old London railway that transported the deceased.

3. Plague and Torture at The Edinburgh Dungeon

Explore Scotland’s murky past through an 80-minute, state-of-the-art and fully interactive theatrical experience at The Edinburgh Dungeons. With 11 actor-led shows and two thrilling rides, it’s just the right amount of fun with the right amount of fright. New for 2017 Halloween season is a show called the ‘Resurrectionists’. Get your tickets quick as they always sell out.

4. Monsters and Magic at Muncaster Castle

Halloween is an exciting time at the historic haunted Muncaster Castle in West Cumbria. At the ginormous family home set in 77 acres of grass and woodland, there’s no shortage of things going on — from the Muncaster Monster Cabaret and The Scary Maze, to The Ghostly Grotto and the Tudor Alchemist workshops. Halloween week runs from 26th-31st October. Make sure to go in fancy dress and bring a torch if you’ll still be there after dark!

5. Historical Horror Tours at Newcastle Castle

Historical Horror Tours at Newcastle Castle will both teach and terrify you, but probably more the later. These walking theatrical performances are a great insight into the ghosts of Newcastle’s turbulent past. Accompanying a costumed guide, visitors are lead down passageways and chambers and encounter some ‘interesting’ characters brought to life from the past.

6. The Grand Old Ghosts of York

The Ghost Hunt of York is so popular and chilling it runs all year round — whatever the weather. The Victorian guide is said to manifest at the stroke of half-past seven at the bottom of Shambles, England’s most famous medieval street. There he leads a group of willing victims into the darker side of York’s history by the ring of his ‘death bell’. No need to book, not even for Halloween. And make sure to take advantage of the discounts for boils and ghouls.
