Five Questions Parents Could Ask About Your School Trip

When a child goes home with a letter announcing a school trip, most parents will straight away want to know – when, why and how much? They will also want to know about safety and security.

Here are five questions that parents may want to ask about school trips and it’s important to know how to answer them.

Travel

If you are travelling by minibus you will need to state this with the parents as they will want to know how their child is travelling there. If their child has motion sickness or any other health conditions then parents will need to know so they can plan.

What activities will be offered?

Does your trip have an educational focus? Or is it a day out? Whatever the focus is parents will want to know what activities their children will be doing. You should have a structured itinerary so parents are up to date with what’s planned for their child. If it’s a residential it might help to hold an open evening at the school to talk to all the parents about what is planned so they can ask any further questions.

What will they learn?

Time outside the classroom provides pupils with all kinds of learning experience from curriculum connections to independent learning. Being in a new environment offers different perspectives and encourages questions. It will provide children with experiences they will share with their classmates that they will remember for years. Teachers can address these points on the letter and outline the key objectives of the trip.

Who holds responsibility?

It needs to be outlined who is responsible on the trip especially if it includes an overnight stay. Parents may also wish to have the details of any chaperones on the trip as well.

Discipline and safety

The ideal way to help keep kids safe and to cover any discipline issues is to ensure kids understand the behaviour rules.

Helping to prepare your child to make the most of the educational experience should be your goal. If the parents are kept informed and updated this will make the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved.
