Essentials pupils should take on a school trip

If you’re planning a school trip or a residential with a class you need to make sure your pupils know what to pack and how to prepare. A lot of what to take on a trip is dependent on several elements, time of year, where you are all going and how old the children are.
What to take on a minibus trip
1. Sunglasses, sun hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. This is obviously seasonal but if you are taking your class to the local nature trail, during the summer months, where they will be outside most of the day then it goes without saying that the above are probably the most important things to pack.
2. Water, not seasonal but important all year round. Always insist they bring it and always remind them to drink it to avoid dehydration.
3. Tell them to wear comfy, practical clothes. The older the child is, the less likely they will go for comfort over style. Remind them they need to wear practical clothes and explain the activities will need sensible clothing
4. Regardless of season it’s always a good idea for kids to pack waterproofs. We’re in England – you never know!
5. If you have a child in your class with severe allergies or asthma make sure they pack their epi pens or inhalers. Check they have them before they leave.
6. If you’re taking older children you need to decide a policy on mobile phones. You will find most parents will now prefer their older children to carry one for personal safety reasons especially if they’re staying over night.
7. Remind children to bring a packed healthy lunch. If it’s a very long day you might also suggest they pack a snack too. This is an exciting part for a child and for the adults! You can stop somewhere for a lunch break or a picnic if it’s sunny.
8. For longer journeys suggest bringing games along with them. Maybe not books as one of them will probably get motion sickness!
