Interactive Museums For South Yorkshire School Trips

When you’re planning a school trip, if can be tough thinking of great places to take your students.

We’re here to help, our South Yorkshire School Trips series will give you a rundown of top destinations for school trips. Today, we’re looking at interactive museums that can help to teach and inspire your students in a hands on way.

Museums are an incredible way to get your students excited about science, geography, history, art, or pretty much any topic that you’re currently teaching. Luckily for us, Yorkshire is home to some incredible museums, some of which are even interactive to add that extra bit of oomf to your school trip.

Magna Science Adventure Centre

Based in the old Templeborough steelworks on the edge of Rotherham, Magna Science Adventure Centre is an incredible day out for students of any age. The museum is jam packed full of over 100 interactive exhibits that help your students to explore the exciting work of science and technology.

The centre is split into four ‘pavilions’: Air, Earth, Fire, and Water that include activities such as operating real JCBs, observing tornados made of fire, and exploding rock faces. Each of the pavilions has been designed to facilitate learning through investigation and play, as well as teaching the history of our county’s steelmaking heritage.

Eureka! The National Children’s Museum

Eureka! is the country’s only fully interactive museum where nothing is trapped inside a glass cabinet. Situated in Halifax, Eureka! houses over 400 interactive exhibits that are designed for your students to learn about themselves and the world around them. The museum offers carefully crafted school workshops that are built to inspire curiosity and, in Eureka!’s words, ‘ignite children’s appetite for knowledge’. If you’re feeling up to an over-nighter, Eureka! offer a ‘night at the museum’ package that allows you and your student to sleep over on site. Sounds great, right? Just don’t forget your sleeping bag…

Eden Camp

This museum requires travelling a little further afield, but is a must-do for any class studying World War Two. Set in Malton, North Yorkshire, in an original Prisoner of War Camp, Eden Camp is a museum that lets your students travel back in time to explore life in wartime Britain. Experience the Home Front, the Frontline, and even the Blitz; experience the sights, the sounds, and even the smells for life during the war. This museum truly brings history to life, immersing your students in their learning.

For school trips, Eden Camp offers a self-led trip to the museum to allow you to tailor the trip to your specific objectives; it has been designed to meet all the requirements for the National Curriculum in all subjects.
