How your school can get involved with Road Safety Week 2021

Road Safety Week 2021, coordinated annually by road safety charity Brake, will celebrate road safety professionals, or ‘road safety heroes’, and their efforts to improve road safety throughout the UK between 15-21 November 2021.

The road safety charity has highlighted the important role of schools and families in making a difference to road safety and says that road safety is a great subject to engage children and young people.

The Brake website says, “Road crashes are a major cause of death and injury among the young, with the risk rising as children reach secondary school age and have more independence. Danger from traffic is also a big factor in whether children and young people are able to walk and cycle to school, to the park or to see friends, and therefore affects their ability to be healthy and socially active”.

You can find helpful teaching resources from Brake for children of all ages here.

How to get involved with Road Safety Week 2021:

Brake is encouraging all organisations to take action for Road Safety Week, and suggests the following ways to get stuck in:

  • Schools – help children, young people and parents learn about road safety heroes and why road safety matters and enable them to speak up for safe and healthy journeys.
  • Organisations – be a road safety hero by managing road risk through good policies, procedures and effective driver training and education.
  • Emergency services and road safety professionals – highlight the work you do as road safety heroes to reduce casualties and care for people affected by crashes.
  • Road crash victims – share stories about how road safety heroes helped you after a crash.

You can also sign up for a free ‘action pack’ which includes learning resources and marketing materials to raise awareness on the subject with your organisation here.

The road safety charity is also offering 5M x 1M giant Road Safety Week banners for sale, which are made to order with your organisation’s logo.
