Suffolk residents receive fake warning notices
23 May 2021
Are residents taking tackling the issue of antisocial pavement parking into their own hands?
In Stowmarket, Suffolk, there have been reports of notices placed on vehicles which were parked on the pavement, warning that "you MUST not park partially or wholly on the pavement" and stating that the offence carries a £1,000 fine.
The note bore the Suffolk Constabulary logo and crest, but could easily be detected as a fake, given that the Highway Code section quoted in the note only currently applies to London – although antisocial pavement parking may soon be made an offence nationwide.
Also, the penalty for antisocial pavement parking in London is currently a £70 fine.
The local who received the note told the BBC that he believed the note was written by an annoyed resident. He said, "It looked really fake like someone had copy and pasted a whole bunch of rules that didn't make sense.
"It is frustrating because you do feel guilty for having to park on the pavement, even if it's just overnight.
"I think it's an impossible problem to solve, unless a car park allows people to park for free."
Suffolk Police said, "The person responsible is using Suffolk Constabulary's header and crest to make this look legitimate when it is not, and it is an offence to do so.
"Police have conducted local enquiries and anyone who knows who is responsible should contact Stowmarket police."
