UK carbon emissions have dropped by 15% during the pandemic

The Carbon Trust, in partnership with Llodys Banking Group, has calculated that carbon emissions in the UK have dropped by 15% over the course of the pandemic, based upon analysis of consumer spending behaviour.

The research, published on March 31 2021, takes into account spending on food and drink, fuel, commuting, airlines, electrical stores and clothing stores.

Government restrictions on international and domestic travel during the pandemic and an increase in the number of people working from home have lowered commuting emissions by 64%. The equivalent of 3.7m tonnes of CO2 and fuel emissions produced by commuters in the UK has decreased by 21% compared with 2019. Moreover, airline emissions have reduced by 74%.

The research finds that 66% of the public consider protecting the environment a top priority for post pandemic recovery. Though, 20% of the public admitted to making no effort to help the environment during the UK’s third period of lockdown.

Despite this, it seems that the pandemic has had a positive impact on people’s attitudes towards helping the environment. Lloyds Banking Group revealed the following statistics:

  • 72% said that they would make a conscious effort to cut their carbon footprint, post-lockdown.
  • 29% of full-time employees intend to continue work from home 2-3 days per week after restrictions are lifted.
  • 49% of over 55s and 27% of 18-24-year olds plan to continue shopping locally.
  • 36% of over 55s and 23% of 18-24-year olds plan to limit their car usage.
  • 16% of over 55s and 7% of 18-24-year olds plan to make improvements to their home energy efficiency.

Carbon Trust Director Myles McCarthy said, “It is encouraging to see that the environment remains top of mind for two thirds of people in post pandemic recovery. Lockdown has disrupted our lives in many aspects, challenging people from turning aspirations into action, while encouraging more sustainable habits like homeworking and local shopping.

“As lockdown eases, and in the run-up to COP26, it is time for consumers, citizens, businesses and governments to come together and build the enabling environment that will help turn climate ambitions into long-term impact.”

We at Marshall Minibus leasing are pleased to hear that the UK has reduced its level of carbon emissions during the pandemic, and more so to see the public committing to continued efforts to protect the environment, post-pandemic.
