Bath Clean Air Zone is live

As of March 16 2021, the first clean air zone (CAZ) outside of London is live in the city centre of Bath. We at Marshall Minibus are always interested in news about steps taken to protect our planet, and trust that you find this information useful.

The class C CAZ, which will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, will see non-compliant vans, taxis and minibuses charged £9 to enter the zone. Non-compliant trucks, lorries, coaches and buses will be charged £100. Private cars and motorbikes will not be charged.

CAZ charges will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition cameras, which have been installed on every road leading into the new zone. Plates will be checked against the DVLA database to find out whether or not each vehicle is compliant.

Drivers of non-compliant vehicles who intend to enter the zone must declare and pre-pay for their journey, or they will receive a penalty charge notice.

You can use the government’s central CAZ service to find out if you will be charged to travel within the Bath CAZ.

The government has extended £9.4million in funding to Bath and North East Somerset to help its residents and local driving-for-work businesses to replace polluting vehicles with compliant ones. Already most that 500 businesses have applied to the council’s scheme and drivers who are accepted under the scheme will be able to apply for exemptions on their current, non-compliant vehicles for up to two years.

The Bath & North East Somerset Council website say that to be eligible for the scheme, you must:

  • have at least one chargeable, non-compliant vehicle that travels an average of two or more times a week in Bath’s Clean Air Zone, over a minimum 60 day period
  • have been living at, or trading from your current address since April 2020
  • have owned the vehicle you want to replace since April 2020.

Leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council Councillor Dine Romero said, “This a landmark day for the city. We’ve put up with unacceptable levels of nitrogen dioxide for too long. This is unfair on residents, particularly vulnerable older people and children. We want to reduce NO2 pollution in Bath to within legal limits by the end of 2021 at the latest, and a charging clean air zone is the only way we can achieve this.

“We know this is difficult time for businesses, but we’ve gone ahead with the zone during the pandemic because this is a pressing public health issue. However, we are working with residents and businesses to help them replace polluting vehicles with cleaner ones and there is significant financial and practical help available.”
