The government recently took a huge step towards zero-emission vehicles. The Prime Minister, Transport Secretary and Business Secretary announced the end of the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030. There is £1.8 billion being invested in building the infrastructure needed to support the new low emission vehicles that will be joining our roads. This will include the creation of a world-leading network of chargers as well as further research into the technologies behind cleaner power.
On today’s motorways and major A roads, a driver is never more than 25 miles away from a charge point. This is reassurance that diesel and petrol vehicle owners need in order to cross the bridge to the greener side.
Schools can benefit massively from low-emission vehicles as the short school run is perfectly suited to the range of the electric minibus. This means buses will only need to be charged once per week and can be charged on site, overnight. This eliminates the headache of searching for charge points on the road. The eco-friendly aspect of the minibus is beneficial for schools that need travel in cities with low emission zones as it avoids paying the daily charges that really add up over time.
We understand that the minibus saves multiple car journeys and reduces the overall emissions of group travel, but what does the future of leasing an eco-friendly minibus look like? It’s certainly exciting! Electric power innovation and technology is advancing at an accelerated rate with demand increasing rapidly. There are over 373,000 plug-in cars registered in the UK as of October 2020 and we saw a 184% increase in pure-electric registrations compared to the previous year in September according to Next GreenCar.
The technology for electric minibuses is on the market currently, it is still in the early stages of release and it will take some time before we see electric models of big brands such as Mercedes Benz and Peugeot. However, progress is being made and we’re excitedly waiting to get involved. The goal for minibus travel is to become evergreen and we look forward to being part of the journey.
