National police campaign to tackle illegal mobile phone usage underway

On February 8 2021, a two week national police campaign to target illegal mobile phone use by drivers began. We at Marshall Minibus leasing are supportive of any measures that improve safety on the road.

In the UK, using a mobile phone whilst driving is an offence which carries a fine of £200 and six penalty points.

It is a common misconception that drivers are allowed to make ‘hands-free’ calls, but this is not the case. Drivers who are caught making hands-free calls can be convicted of not being in control of their vehicle, resulting in a £100 fine and three penalty points.

GEM Motoring Assist is urging drivers not to use a mobile phone whilst driving, including when stationary at a traffic light, and to pull over safely before making a call in the event of an emergency.

Chief executive of GEM Motoring Assist Neil Worth said, “Holding and using any device while in control of a car is a potentially lethal distraction that is against the law.

“The physical task of keying in characters on your phone or scrolling through information is very risky while you are also at the wheel of a vehicle.

“It’s also mentally distracting, and if you allow yourself to take part in a conversation or try to read and respond to data on your phone, you’re dramatically reducing your ability to focus on safe driving.”
