The government is providing 1.3 million laptops for remote learning

The Department for Education (DfE) is delivering 1.3 million devices to schools across the country to support remote learning, following the news that up to 50% of children are still attending school during lockdown. We at Marshall Minibus leasing are pleased to see the UK government stepping in to assist with remote learning for disadvantaged children.
A press release from the DfE reported that “laptops and tablets have been made available, if there is no existing access to a device, for:
- disadvantaged children in years 3 to 11 whose face-to-face education is disrupted
- disadvantaged children in any year group who have been advised to shield because they (or someone they live with) are clinically extremely vulnerable
- disadvantaged children in any year group attending a hospital school
- disadvantaged 14 to 16-year-olds enrolled for Key Stage 4 at sixth-form colleges and whose face-to-face education is disrupted.”
The number of laptops provided has been calculated based on free school meals data and an estimate of the number of devices a school or college already has, as well as an estimate of private device ownership.Schools, parents, carers or pupils are invited to get help with technology where more devices are required.
This is in addition to the laptops, tablets and 4G wireless routers that were provided by the DfE for remote learning in the summer term of 2020. Laptops and tablets were ordered and distributed by local authorities and academy trusts to:
- care leavers and children with a social worker
- year 10 pupils who did not have a social worker and were in maintained schools, including voluntary aided schools
- year 10 pupils who did not have a social worker
- year 10 pupils who did not have access to a laptop or tablet through another source.
