The DVLA Offer an 11 Month Extension on Driving Licences

The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA)  has pushed the end date of the seven-month extension on driving licences, originally offered on those set to expire between February 1 2020 and August 31 2020, by a further four months.

The now 11-month extension will cover licences that are set to expire at the end of the year and a renewal reminder will be sent out before the end of this period. However, the DVLA’s driver records will not be updated for each individual, and therefore will still show the original legal expiry date. 

The extension was originally offered to help drivers who were struggling or unable to renew their licence to continue essential travel during lockdown. Important to note is the fact that this extension does not cover the driver’s entitlement to drive in regard to age, medical condition or as a vocational driver. 

Julie Lennard, chief executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, said, “Being able to drive is a lifeline for millions of people and this further extension will ensure that in these continued uncertain times, drivers don’t need to worry about the admin or the associated costs with renewing their licences.

“The temporary extension is automatic, and drivers do not need to do anything. Drivers who have already applied to renew their photocard driving licence or entitlement to drive can usually carry on driving while we process their application, providing they have not been told by their doctor or optician that they should not drive.”
