RAC Says That 67% Of Road Accidents Happen On Urban Roads

Travel restrictions have been lifted, and our roads are getting busier. Busier than ever, actually.

Given that the current advice is to avoid public transport wherever possible, we can expect to see more motorists on our road than pre-lockdown. With this in mind we could see a rise in road traffic accidents, but where are we most likely to see this spike?

The RAC published an article back in May of 2020, revealing that the majority of total accidents occur in towns and cities, despite the fact that two-thirds of fatal accidents happen on rural roads.

Sharing statistics from 2018, the RAC reported that in London, that there were 25,662 accidents, the equivalent of 2,881 accidents per 1 million people, calling it “higher than any other region in the country”. Worthy of note is that there were 12 fatal accidents per 1 million people in the same region, much lower than the rest of the country.

These same statistics also showed that it was, in fact, slower roads with speed limits of 21 to 30mph that had the highest fatal crash rate, at 34%. While roads with a speed limit of 61mph or more accounted for just 7% of crashes, and 13% of fatal accidents.

The RAC said that “When it comes to the location of accidents, the figures indicate staggered or T-junctions were the most dangerous” and continued “Staggered or T-junctions saw 29% of all accidents, far ahead of crossroads (9%) and roundabouts (8%)”.

Based on to information sourced from a Freedom of Information request, the RAC has dubbed the A35 in Dorset “the UK’s most dangerous road”, having seen 594 of Dorset’s 1,837 total crashes in 2019.

We at Marshall Minibus wish you safe travel wherever you go.
