Digitisation of University Education
15 June 2020
Here at Marshall Minibus, we recognise that the current circumstances have altered the day-to-day routine for many students. We would like to show the effects this is having on the education system and how minibus leasing can still play a crucial role in supporting students.
University students across the country have come accustomed to a “new normal”. Their lecture halls have been replaced by online webinars and the seminars have become digital lessons. This rapid digitalisation of the education programmes may have lasting impacts and even grow as the social distancing restrictions are eased.
Already many universities have decided to have the autumn semester completely online with a return to campus only a consideration for 2021. With the software now in place, the digital learning platforms should still deliver high quality material to students. But what do the students think? A Poll conducted by Higher Education Policy Institute found that 49% of students were either very satisfied or quite satisfied with the online learning compared to the 23% that were not satisfied and the 29% in the middle. This suggests that from a purely educational viewpoint the digitalisation of university learning is working.
However, with all the learning done remotely students are missing out on the non-replaceable social activities or field trips usually organised by such institutions.
The digitalisation of education will very likely have a lasting impact on the way student learn with more remote activities. For staff at universities, there will still be an important role for them to support their students where possible through face-to-face interactions and in the long term with social events or field trips.
