England’s ‘cycling capital’ enforces new speed limit for bikes

The ‘cycling capital’ of England, Cambridge, has introduced the country’s first ever speed limit for cyclists to tackle an increasing threat to the safety of pedestrians.

Cambridgeshire County Council will enforce the new 15MPH limit for bikes along two shared-use paths along its 16-mile ‘guided busway’, but the restrictions could be used along all parts of the route that fall on council-owned land.

A dedicated police patrol will assist the new ‘busway safety team’ in enforcing the limit using speed monitoring equipment and multiple QR code placards have been placed around the route to encourage locals to report ‘antisocial behaviour and criminality on the busway’ to the police.

Hobby cyclists have posted videos online tracking their speed and heart rates as they cycle along the busway path – along which all users share one combined path - showing dangerous behaviour including travelling at speeds of around 20mph, swerving around dog walkers, elderly pedestrians and toddlers walking alongside their parents and riding balance bikes.

Anyone breaking the limit will be stopped by enforcement officers and advised to slow down, with repeat offenders fined.
