Motorway users affected by faulty speed cameras

An anomaly impacting around 10 per cent of England's motorways and major A roads has resulted in 2,650 wrongful speed camera activations since 2021.

The fault involved a delay of around 10 seconds between cameras and variable speed signs, meaning some drivers were incorrectly marked for speeding after the reduced limit had been changed.

National Highways apologised for the error and assured drivers that where applicable, they will be reimbursed for fines paid, with any related points removed from their driving licence.

In response, police forces have temporarily stopped issuing fines from variable speed cameras until they are assured that they are operating accurately.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport told the BBC, "We apologise to anyone who has been affected. Safety was never compromised, and we are working with policing to ensure nobody is incorrectly prosecuted in future.

"Enforcement is still in place, and the public can remain confident that only motorists who break the rules will be penalised."
