Uber ‘robotaxi’ service to go live from Spring 2026
18 August 2025
Uber has announced it will launch self-driving taxis in the UK capital from Spring 2026, its new ‘robotaxi’ service in partnership with AI start-up Wayve.
The service will initially have a human driver present and ready to take over control of the vehicle in an emergency before the trials eventually transition to being fully driverless.
Existing trials of self-driving taxis by Uber are mostly based in the US where there are much simpler road layouts than London, which the Uber Chief, Andrew Macdonald, describes as “one of the world's busiest and most complex urban environments”.
Uber hopes that driverless vehicles will reduce road deaths and injuries as their systems will be designed to have faster reaction times than humans, and will not become distracted or tired.
According to the Department for Transport (DfT), the development of automated vehicle technology could create 38,000 jobs in the UK and add £42 billion to the economy by 2035.
