Green light for more 20MPH zones throughout London

Transport for London (TfL) has commissioned research which examined police collision data for 157 schemes across London and compared the three years before they were introduced with the three years afterwards. Now, the positive findings have given the green light for more speed cuts throughout London.

Borough-wide 20MPH zones were first introduced in London in 2023 and the research found no evidence that the limits have increased congestion.

It was discovered that there were 35 per cent fewer collisions and 36 per cent fewer casualties on 20MPH roads since the introduction of the zones. There was also a dramatic 50 per cent and 75 per cent reduction in child casualties and fatalities respectively.

Other factors also helped to reduce collisions and casualties, such as safer cars, changes to the road layout and reductions in overall traffic from schemes such as the congestion charge.

The Mayor of London’s walking and cycling commissioner Will Norman said, “This compelling new analysis shows clearly that lowering speeds is saving lives.

“Slower speeds not only protect the most vulnerable, they also help create safer, more welcoming streets, and are a vital part of building a safer London for everyone.

“The Mayor and I are proud that London is leading the way with bold, evidence-led action to reduce danger on our roads, and we will continue working to eliminate death and serious injury on the transport network as part of our Vision Zero goal.” (The Vision Zero goal is for all deaths and serious injuries to be eradicated from London’s transport network by 2041.)
