Introduction of 11-hour school day ‘improves student behaviour’
28 April 2025
Last year, a West-London school based in Notting Hill trialled an 11-hour school day and its headteacher says that this scheme could be rolled out across more schools throughout the country after the change was found to improve student behaviour, homework completion and their “sense of belonging”.
All Saints Catholic College ran two non-compulsory extended school provision (ESP) pilots for year 7 and 8 pupils over the summer and autumn terms in 2024. Subsequent reports found that, for those children who took part in the summer pilot, homework sanctions were down by 12 per cent and stars awarded to students for good behaviour were up 16 per cent.
The pilots ran over 10 weeks in the summer term and four weeks during September. During this time, the school day was extended from 7:00AM to 6:00PM on Monday to Thursday. These timings included an hour of homework support after school and extracurricular activities, with breakfast and dinner provided for students.
Headmaster Andrew O’Neill commented, “What excites me most about the ESP is its scalability.
“This is not limited to our school – it has the potential to inspire a new approach to education across the broader community and beyond.”
He added, “We have seen 14 years of the decimation of services that help children to thrive. We as schools need to be the vanguard of bringing that back and advocating for children.”
