Intoxication a trending contributory factor in e-scooter crashes
06 May 2024
As e-scooters continue to grow in popularity and with regulations slowly catching up, road safety charity Brake has urged decision-makers to consider the possibilities of other small, personal electric transport technologies, such as electric ‘golf buggies’, replacing cars for short journeys in the future.
The charity says that it is important to forward-plan for such possibilities in order to ensure that relevant legislation can be quickly implemented for the safety of all road users.
Currently, legislation and regulations around e-scooters are largely focused on mandatory speed limiters and road re-design to separate riders from pedestrians.
Without a speed limiter, electric scooters can travel at speeds of around 30mph, giving them the potential to cause serious injuries to both rider and pedestrians.
Interestingly, data collected from the Trauma Audit and Research Network uncovered a pattern of injuries in cyclists and e-scooter riders in which the former is more prone to limb injuries and the latter is more susceptible to head injuries. Statistics for e-scooter accidents reveal a trend of contributing factors, such as:
- Male riders
- Intoxication
- Late evening
- More than one person riding
- Private rather than public scooter
- No speed limiter
- Small wheels
- Low kickboard.
The theme of this year’s annual Road Safety Week is ‘speed’, and Brake has urged individuals, communities and organisations to take part in order to incite change. Find out more about how you can get involved here.
