Department for Education seeking contractors to assist with climate change strategy

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced that it will provide £3.9 million to hire one or more external contractors to help schools implement the UK government’s climate change strategy for education.

The strategy, published in 2022, says that all education settings must nominate a ‘sustainability lead’ to oversee the plans by 2025.

The payment, covering a two year contract which will begin in July 2023, will go towards recruiting and managing a team of expert volunteers from education, academia and industry to provide advice and to help schools develop their own climate action plans.

These plans are expected to cover decarbonisation and energy efficiency, adaptation and resilience, biodiversity and green infrastructure, climate education and green skills and careers.

The nominated contractor or contractors will work with the Natural History Museum to encourage collaboration with the National Education Nature Park and Climate Action Award initiatives.

The DfE is also offering an £840,000 contract running over the same time frame to design an online ‘sustainability leadership in education’ support hub which would offer guidance and information to schools on the subject.

The hub would host an online self-assessment feature, allowing sustainability leads to evaluate their capacity to deliver a wholistic approach to sustainability, and subsequently suggest relevant resources to create a climate action plan.

The winning contactor would also be required to assemble a directory of training courses on environmental sustainability and organisations which can assist sustainability leads, and develop a communications campaign to raise awareness of the resources.
