Schools invited to apply for projects trialled by the Education Endowment Foundation

The Education Endowment Foundation is seeking schools in England to participate in projects to improve science and reading for school children.

The first programme is a trial of Ascents 121, which focuses on training undergraduate students to deliver weekly, one-to-one science mentoring sessions to year 11 pupils in the lead up to their GCSE exam. The trial will be evaluated by NatCen.

The Foundation is looking for secondary schools in London, the south west, East Midlands, and north of England to participate.

The scheme was initially trialled in 2019, but an impact statement was not completed due to interruption by the pandemic.

The second scheme, Focus4Taps, will provide “high quality professional development” for science teachers and subject leaders over the course of an academic year in order to improve students’ education. A previous trial of this scheme resulted in an average of two months’ additional progress in primary school students who participated.

Primary schools can also apply to take part in a trial of FFT Reciprocal Reading, which is a structured, targeted 12-week intervention designed to support pupils in years 5 and 6.

Chief executive professor Becky Francis said it was “more important than ever that schools have assurances that the teaching and learning approaches they are investing resources in are going to have the desired effect on pupil progress”.
