The National Education Nature Park and Climate Action Awards Scheme

The Department for Education has teamed up with the Natural History Museum to assist in establishing Nature Parks at educational establishments throughout the country, which will collectively be known as the National Educational Nature Park. The partnership will also set up a climate action awards scheme.

These initiatives will provide every young person in England with the opportunity to understand the concepts of climate change and biodiversity loss and feel able to do something about it.

The Nature Parks will provide opportunities for young people to take part in community science, biodiversity monitoring and data analysis, will create pollinator-friendly habitats where biodiversity can thrive.

The climate action award scheme will be designed in collaboration with children and young people and will both recognise their efforts in protecting the local environment and help them to develop their skills and knowledge in biodiversity and sustainability.

Director of the Natural History Museum Dr Doug Gurr said, “We applaud the Department for Education’s initiative in encouraging a love for nature and are absolutely delighted to be the lead partner on the National Education Nature Park and climate action award scheme.

“Biodiversity loss is as catastrophic as climate change and our own research has shown the UK to be one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

“Combatting biodiversity loss by supporting children and young people in England to transform their education space for wildlife will be a significant step in addressing the planetary emergency as well as empowering young people to take action, connect with nature and become Advocates for the Planet.”
