Bristol, Newcastle and Gateshead to launch Clean Air Zones in 2022

The Mayor of Bristol has confirmed that the city’s new Clean Air Zone, which was originally meant to launch in October 2022, will now launch on November 28 2022. 

The class D Clean Air Zone will cost drivers of non-compliant cars £9 per day to enter. Exemptions include: 

• residents in the zone
• people working within the zone and earning less than £26,000 a year 
• Blue Badge holders
• patients attending hospitals in the zone, they can register their vehicle at their appointment to avoid the charge.

Newcastle and Gateshead have also laid out plans to launch a new Clean Air Zone, which was originally meant to begin charging in July 2022. 

The Gateshead Council website confirms that the zone has now been approved by councillors from both authorities and will begin charging non-compliant taxis, buses and HGVs from January 30 2023 and non-compliant vans from July 2023, subject to government approval. 

If the proposals are approved by the government, the zone will be operational later this year, and non-compliant vehicles entering will be sent warning letters initially. 

It says that the delay was intended to allow small businesses time to upgrade their vehicles in light of the national LGV supply shortage.
