Recovery premium funding to double for secondary schools next year

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced that it will double Recovery premium funding, for secondary schools throughout the UK in order to fund evidence-based activities including additional tutoring, extra time in school and speech and language therapy.

The DfE says that this funding will provide support beyond that already available through the National Tutoring Programme, which is also set to be simplified next year with funding provided directly to schools. Data from the Programme now shows that over 1.5 million courses have started since its launch - almost 1.2 million courses of which started in this academic year.

Rates for schools published on May 26 showed than, on average, secondary schools will receive 50 per cent more funding in 2023, up to £60,000 from £30,000. 

Primary schools will also receive an increased amount of funding, up to £7,000. 

This works out as £276 per eligible pupil for secondary schools and, £145 per eligible pupil for primary schools. Pupils in special units in these schools will be eligible to receive double the funding rate.

Special schools and alternative provision will also receive £290 per primary pupil and £552 per secondary pupil.

The focus for support has turned to secondary school pupilar as greater learning gaps have been found in those with less time left in education, compared with primary pupils who have already recovered much of their progress lost during the pandemic (two thirds of progress in reading and around half lost in maths).
