TFL to expand 20MPH limits and crackdown on speeding

A recent report by Transport for London (TFL) reveals that it is ‘working towards having the capacity to enforce up to one million speeding offences by 2024/25’.

This annual target is hoped to be achieved through the expansion of 20MPH speed limits in the capital and five new ‘LASERcam 4’ devices that combine a speed gun and video camera, which will be used in speeding ‘hot spot’ locations.

Almost 50 miles of TfL red routes are already limited to 20mph, with a further 140 miles due to be converted by 2024.

In the period April to November 2021, the Metropolitan Police (the Met) reported 362,731 road traffic offences, 76 per cent of which were speeding offences. This equates to around 40,000 speeding offences per month and is a 34 per cent increase on the same period in the previous year.  

Tickets issues for speeding offences result in fines of at least £100, which goes to the treasury. 

A report to TFL’s safety committee said, “We have been working with the [Met] to increase the level of police enforcement to tackle speeding and the harm it causes.

“This has included a programme of activity to increase the effectiveness of the safety camera operation, working towards having the capacity to enforce up to one million speeding offences by 2024/25.”
