Manchester CAZ delayed

The government recently granted permission to Manchester authorities to delay the implementation of the Manchester Clean Air Zone following concerns about the impact of Covid-19 on supply chains and the price and availability of second-hand vehicles.

Evidence provided by Greater Manchester clearly showed that these impacts would make it harder for people to upgrade to cleaner vehicles and therefore the Clean Air Zone would be unlikely to deliver compliance with legal limits by the original date of 2024.

In light of this, the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has been granted more time to achieve NO2 compliance, for which the deadline is now 2026.

In preparation for the launch of the Clean Air Zone, Manchester authorities had implemented 1,309 new ‘Clean Air Zone’ road signs - 1,194 of which will now need to be replaced because they wrongly state that vehicles will be charged from the now postponed date of May 30 2022.

In an official release, a government spokesperson wrote, ‘Given the scale of the proposed Clean Air Zone, at nearly three times the size of London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone, it is important to get this right’.
