Navigating Clean Air Zones and Euro 6 compliance

The subject of Clean Air Zones (CAZs) can be something of a minefield to navigate, with types, classes and charges varying widely throughout the UK.

In addition to CAZs, we also have various Low Emission Zones (LEZs), which generally only apply to public transport vehicles, an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London and the UK’s first Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) is expected to come into force in Oxford later this month from February 28 2022.

Currently, there are active clean air zones in Bath (Class C), Birmingham (Class D) and Portsmouth (Class B) and several more are expected to begin operating later this year.

The RAC Foundation has created a helpful map which shows current and planned zone schemes throughout the UK, colour coded by status.

You can also find out more about clean air zone types, classes, charges and locations through the government website, where you will also find a useful tool that allows you to check whether you could be charged to enter a zone.

Charges vary based on the class of the zone, as well as vehicle type and the purpose of your journey (commercial or private). Each vehicle type has a minimum emission standard which is required to be met in order to avoid charges in clean air zones. For minibuses, this emissions standard is Euro 6.

If your establishment is operating a minibus which is over 6 years old, the likelihood is that it does not meet the Euro 6 standard.

Euro 6 vehicles are manufactured to reduce the levels of harmful emissions including nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide and particulates. You can find out more about the Euro 6 standard here.
