Games to Make Car Journeys Fun

Few people think that long car journeys can be exciting. However, with the right resources and things to do, it is easy to transform what might feel a drag into a journey. Marshall Leasing has come up with a few ways to transform a journey into a fun one. There are a variety of things that can be done to pass the time in an entertaining way. There are games, audio books, music, reading a book or even downloading a film or programme onto a smartphone.

Games

With so many games to choose from, it can be hard to pick which one best tests your skillset and levels of fun. There is the obvious ‘Eye Spy’ ritual, but this quickly becomes boring and the children become uninterested. Therefore, why not spark a little joy into a car journey with educational memory games such as ‘what Grandma had in her basket’ or trying to spot different makes of cars? These may seem simple, but sometimes simplicity is the key to keeping things fun, easy and less stressful, especially when travelling with children.

Audio Books

Whether the passengers are young or old, audio books are a great way to pass the time in an entertaining manner. With everything from brand new novels to the old-time classics being turned into an audio book, a car journey is a satisfying way to listen, laugh and even learn. If one can’t read in moving vehicles due to having motion sickness, audio books are a brilliant distraction, keeping the traveller occupied.

Music

Music is a universal language and is appreciated by most. By preparing a playlist that everyone in the vehicle will enjoy is a great way to start. Whether it is cheesy tunes that can be used for a funny game of karaoke or soothing songs that calm passengers into a comfortable sleep, music can be used in a variety of ways. Not only does it pass the time but those in the car can look back on trips they have taken and be able to associate them with specific songs that they listened to at poignant moments of the journey.

Books

There are few people who can read in the car for long periods without feeling dizzy. However, those that can are privileged to have another way to pass the time in a long car journey. Consider using an ‘old school’ map to help the driver. It is a great way to pass the time, notably so on long car journeys.

Films

Films and TV are an excellent distraction, particularly when occupying children on long trips. A six-hour drive can be interpreted as only three films for passengers to get through before arriving at their destination. It doesn’t matter if it’s a firm favourite or something that is a new watch, films are a brilliant way to keep backseat passengers entertained and engaged for hours, which in turn helps the time fly by.
