Department for Transport Figures Show Traffic Levels Are Back to Normal

The Department for Transport (DfE) has released statistics covering the period between March 1 2020, to August 17 2020, which show that the amount of vehicles on the road in Great Britain roughly equate to what we would normally currently see at this time of year. 

According to the last update to this data, on August 17 2020 the amount of cars on the road stood at 88% of normal levels, while light commercial vehicles and heavy good vehicles were both at 100%. The percentages shown in the figures are ‘of an equivalent day or week’. 

The figures for passengers using public transport, however, are much lower than usual. On August 17 2020, passengers using National Rail measured just 23% of an equivalent day. London tubes and buses were at 30% and 53% respectively. Buses outside of London stood at 41% during the height of the lockdown.

Interestingly, and likely thanks to the DfE’s recent funding to boost cycling and walking, cyclists have maintained the highest percentage each day, peaking at 349% of normal levels on April 26 2020.  

Simon Williams, spokesperson for the RAC, said “Our research shows that August is set to be a massive month for daytrips as families look to try to make the most of what’s left of the school holidays and pack in some family fun now the lockdown has been eased.”
